We captured this beauty deep in the Georgia Blue Ridge Mountains and stood in amazement just before it slipped back into the current. Few people ever get close enough to a wild brook trout to see it in full color, and we are privileged to bring that moment to life for you.

Brook trout aren't actually trout at all. They're char, and they're the only trout species truly native to the Southern Appalachians, holding on in the same high-elevation headwaters their ancestors have called home since the last Ice Age: no stocking truck, no hatchery, just cold water and time. A dark, marbled back gives way to a flank scattered with red spots ringed in blue halos, over a body that shifts from olive to deep amber. Come fall spawning season, that color turns up even further, and it's easy to see why so many anglers call the brookie the most beautiful fish that swims in freshwater. They're also picky about their home water, needing some of the coldest, cleanest streams left in the Southeast to survive, which means finding one at all is its own kind of reward.
