Brown trout aren't native to these mountains. They trace back to Europe and Western Asia, introduced to Appalachian streams generations ago and now some of the smartest, hardest fish an angler can chase. An olive to golden brown body carries black spots up top and red spots ringed in pale blue halos along the flanks, camouflage built right into the skin. Older wild fish grow more cautious with size, feeding mostly at night and testing an angler's patience more than any other trout in these streams. They hold to the coldest, cleanest water they can find, and fooling one is as much the reward as landing it.
